Almost 2000 chapters and over 4 years later, it finally all comes to an end. Words can’t express how incredible the journey has been. Chong Mei has taken up a huge portion of my life, to the extent where it feels unnatural if I don’t spend a bit of time translating every day. Regarding the ending of the book, I personally agree with the author. The last chapter was a true ending to Chong Mei, albeit bittersweet. That chapter, not the epilogue, embodied the core themes of the book: grasping onto hope, and perhaps more importantly, an undying friendship and love. The book was never solely about Chu Mu. It was about Chu Mu and his soul pets - a bond forged through survival. Of his soul pets, Mo Xie was by his side right from the beginning. It seems only fitting that the journey ends the same way it starts, with a lone soul pet trainer and his first soul pet. And just like Chu Mu’s grasp for hope when he first signed Mo Xie, the ending leaves the same one thing for the reader: hope.
