I am but a traveler in a foreign land, with no desire to become an immortal.
After cultivating Daoism in the deep mountains for twenty years, Master sent Song You down the mountain to witness the demons, ghosts, spirits, monsters and myriad aspects of life, to explore the famed mountains and rivers, and seek the legendary immortals. She said that was the true path of cultivation. Who would have thought, after traversing every corner of the land, the immortal I sought turned out to be myself.

Details

This is a novel that references a lot of ancient legends, ancient poets, Daoist Gods as well as actual culture and traditions practiced during the ancient dynasty. It also references the tools, items, and places used back then. The imagery described in the novel somehow feels comforting. If you are interested in history, Daoism myths, and just getting this sense of healing and comfort as you watch how the MC gets his healing, this should be the book for you.

Song You traversed into an ancient world, growing up in a Daoist temple under the care of his master. After leaving the temple, he descended the mountain to explore the world. He considered planning his future travels, but unfortunately, nothing came to mind.

This was because Song You had little enthusiasm or interest in this world. With limited understanding and insufficient motivation, it naturally made it difficult for him to craft a detailed plan. At times, memories from the past would surface uncontrollably in his mind.

Whenever he thought about the uncertain future, not knowing how far or how long he would walk alone, and how many such nights awaited him, a sense of loneliness would rise within him. What he didn't realize, however, was that from this very night, his story was about to unfold!

After reading far too many Chinese novels, some good but mainly bad. I ended up becoming a self-declared Daoist in the philosophical sense.

Daoism as a philosophy is very hard to describe to someone unfamiliar with it. From my understanding, Daoism is about personal perception of the Dao. To discuss the Dao directly and concretely is taboo — it misleads the recipient about its ineffable nature. Can a description of the feeling of wind on your skin ever hope to match the richness of the experience?

Moreover, this is in complete contrast western philosophy which is derived from direct applications of logic. A pre-conception of "philosophy" from the western perspective makes this even more difficult.

All of that is to say that this does a great job of providing an experiential perspective of "practicing" Daoism. If you want to do so yourself, I encourage you to go and immerse yourself in the world.

Also, the vibes seem pretty good :)

As of chapter 21 I’m confident to say that I enjoyed this story. Start off the journey without background or knowledge about the world, we will learn and absorb the story together with MC. This story is a slow pace and calm, no action and brute, is it boring? Yes, it is boring in some sense but someone will enjoy this story together with me, we will see the problem with calm eye and solve them with steady steps. This is the best representation of Daoist I have ever read to date. By the way Lady Calico is cute, I love this story, and will walk the thousands li journey together with everyone.

After reading 30 chapters i have to say i really like this novel. Its another slow one with careful world building as the journey unfolds. It doesnt dump everything at once for 5-6 chapters but takes bits and pieces where it is appropriate.

This novel doesn't put focus on fighting scenes so be aware that this isn't a novel for everyone. It is more about gaining experience in the world and interacting with it as a reclusive Daoist.

The Interactions between Song You and Lady Calito are great and made me chuckle quite a lot.

If you are into slowly unfolding novels which require careful reading and not skimming over passages i highly recommend it.

Enjoy
