Translator's Intro:

Hello, I'm Krik, the translator for Trials of the Abyss. Like many of you, I discovered the world of web novels and have been captivated ever since. Translating this novel has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and as you delve into its chapters, I hope you become as immersed in the world of Trials of the Abyss as I have been. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I truly hope you enjoy reading this novel as much as I enjoy bringing it to life through translation.

This is the story of a brother's quest to reunite with his little sister, who was forcefully taken from him. Along the way, he faces unimaginable trials, battling fierce creatures and encountering both allies and enemies. His journey is not just a mission to reunite with his sister, but also a test of his strength, courage, and resilience.

Editor's Intro:

Hi, my name is kei and I'm the editor of this novel! While this novel can be quite trope-y, I found myself really appreciating the main character's personality as the story went on and some of the unique ways the author tried to break away from the usual cultivation narrative. I hope you enjoy the read!

As I said I would do, now that it has reached 20 chapters I'm updating my review.

So first off, I'll start with what others are probably expecting:

What tropes are present here?

Well, there's a decent amount.

Be it young masters, though they're pretty much just teens acting their age as I explained in my earlier review (shown below), it's honestly not that bad so far.

We already have a few of what could be considered Meguffins, so no surprises there.

The MC has a special ability(?) that is either due to the Meguffin(s) or some bloodline thing with his missing parents, likely his father.

But at the same time, the author has shown skill in worldbuilding and fight scenes, mostly having good flow throughout.

I'd recommend giving it a try, and go in with as neutral an expectation as possible. Then you'll probably be pleasantly surprised by this one.

8/10 from me.

——————Old Review——————

It has only just begun at 3 chapters thus far, so this review will be updated periodically. First at 20 chaps, then again later depending on if I keep reading.

So far, it's an interesting read with good potential and some of the classic tropes. Young masters, worlds beyond worlds, & even a meguffin item in the possession of the MC who allegedly has shitty talent but some dude noticed he had special aspects to him in the first chapter.

Said person also "kidnapped"¹ his sister, but oh well.

As for the young master(s), it's just some brat so far in the third chapter. Bad intentions and threats so far, but no actual harm besides what is effectively a petty prank and a few insults. Basically just a kid being a kid².

Well that's all, unless you want clarifications on what certain things mean. So far the world building has been decent in the first few chapters, but not enough content to really give a rating.

——————Notes——————

¹ : Definitely kidnapped. Regardless of whether the MC told her to go along with it and that they'd meet again, kidnapping is still kidnapping. Doesn't matter if you pay their guardian when you've already said she doesn't have an option.

² : This is more just my opinion, but for cultivators I'd say they truly become adults much later than a mortal.

Say a cultivator is gonna live to 3000, while a mortal lives to 100. Then I'd say it'll take at least a century or two till the cultivator is like an adult, while the mortal will only need 20-30 years.

It's a matter of perspective, and adults tend to act like children quite often anyway, but it's more a baseline.

As my mum once said: "Adults are just tall children."

As per usual, I'll use Royal Road style for reviewing.

Style: The general feeling of the piece as created by the author's word choice, literary devices, and unique way of writing.

4/5

So far, the only part where I don't enjoy is the first 2-3 chapters because it was quite a bit of world building info. However, everything afterwards feel like the story quite tight in term writing. So imo the style is about 4 because the author lacks a bit of ability to build the world without boring info dumping every now and then. However, everthing else so far has been great. The action is tight, the politics driven behind each character is great so far (they have motivation, abit cliche of motivations but it keeps the tension going which is great).

Story: Plot development and pacing (i.e., how well a story is put together).

I would say this gets about 4/5

I think you have to let the story sit a bit, I don't like how slow it was for the first 2 chapters but I really enjoy it afterwards. The main character seem mysterious in how he obtain his ability for now but I think it will reveal soon. I think the strong point of story is that the MC is quite decisive in killing so far and he keeps to himself because he doesn't want to reveal his ability (since he has no backing, politics is important).

Grammar: The technical aspects of the writing, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

I don't give translated work a rating on this.

Character: The characters in the story, how well they are depicted, how realistic and three-dimensional they are. This applies to both main and side characters

This gets a 4/5 for me.

I think it's great that the character show grief and was quite reasonable and relistic and their grievence. One character lost her whole team so she's angry at the MC (although it's her fault) for being suspicious but she did not lash out because of others (etc). It's also nice there are various distrust between characters and some are willing to place trust where it is earned. Imo, i took off one point because some of characters are quite cliche (lecherous, etc) and it's a bit too obvious.

So overall for now, it's 4/5 for me and I can recommend it but this is the same author as spirit world and god of slaughter (if i'm not wrong) so I'm not sure if it will get super lost or samey later. I hope not. I hope he keep it tight and tense.

I’m almost 100 chapters in and I’m really enjoying this novel! It starts off with a basic trope of a mystery and a fateful encounter but soon evolves into an epic adventure. The characters are more complex than the stereotypical arrogant young masters and misses. As the mc gets embroiled with the upper classes of his world, he slowly learns how to navigate various harrowing adventures and how to not become cannon fodder. He gains friends and learns how to be ruthless towards human foes. The world building is great. I love how the characters are well fleshed out. Happy Reading ✌🏾
