Chapter 9: Genetic Sequence and Players' Level

The amount of work completed in the afternoon was nearly three times that of the morning.

Fifty pieces of wood of various thicknesses piled up on the side of the walls of the nursing home. They were dragged over by the players using ropes and trolleys, and Chu Guang’s expectations were blown away.

Each piece of wood was between eight to ten meters in length, and more than half of them were as thick as a human thigh. Chu Guang tallied a total of two thousand contribution points after making his calculations.

Among the players, Old White did the most. He obtained eight hundred points just by himself.

Gale probably fared the worst. His clone didn’t excel at physical activity and he only had the physique of an ordinary human. After working an entire day, he only earned three hundred points.

As for how they would be able to use those points…

Chu Guang hadn’t thought about that yet! The shelter was dirt poor and all he had were two lollipops in his pocket! The biscuits had been eaten a long time ago!

After giving it some thought, he told the players that in addition to waiting three days for resurrection, they also had to spend resurrection coins, and resurrection coins needed to be purchased with contribution points.

Although the purchasing power of contribution points was weak, the players didn't seem to mind. After all, the game was currently in the closed alpha stage, and it was understandable that there weren’t that many in-game items.

As long as their data wouldn’t be lost after the game was released, they could always find a place to spend those points in the future. Contribution points were just numbers.

It seemed as though he would have to update them on the official website after they went offline.

Although Chu Guang also wanted to learn from Boulder City and give out coins, the shelter was so poor that he didn’t have the materials to make any!

Even though chips were hard currency in Clearwater City, he only had a few left. It was useless to issue chips to them anyway, since it was impossible for players to go to the survivor settlements on their own.

Chu Guang could communicate with the survivors because he knew their language, but the clones those players used were nothing but a blank sheet of paper. They didn’t have their own consciousness and the players wouldn’t know the language aboriginals of the world used.

The language used by the survivors in Clearwater City was the common language of the Federation of People. It was a different language from their original world. At most, it would hold some similarities to Chinese in terms of grammar and pronunciation.

In the future, Chu Guang would consider developing a set of translation tools to solve the problem of communication between players and NPCs.

Along the way, he might be able to redesign the distribution and economic system. But it was far from time to do that.

...

After counting the results of the day’s work, it had already gotten late.

Chu Guang raised his head, glancing at the setting sun on the horizon, slightly squinting his eyes.

"Administrator, I discovered that our outpost has no electricity,” Ample Time muttered, "Why don't we get a generator?"

It was a good question indeed. Too bad for them, Chu Guang couldn’t do anything about it.

"We don't have any additional generators." Chu Guang looked at him and continued, "Which one of you knows how to make one? Or do any of you have skills as an electrician?”

The players looked at each other with blank stares.

"Can't we just pull a wire from underground?" Night Ten wondered out loud. It didn’t take a genius to know that it was a dumb question.

"We won’t be able to find such a long wire, and energy in the shelter isn’t unlimited. Even if it could help in the short term, we won’t be solving our challenges in the long run. In fact, we could end up with bigger problems.” Chu Guang paused for a moment. “It's late, we should go back."

Going back meant logging out for the players.

Although it was not completely dark, it was already five o'clock in the evening. In China, dawn would break soon.

Before they knew it, they had been in the game world for such a long time. When they realized how much time had passed, all of them wore reluctant looks. They clearly wanted to continue playing. They felt that there was too much to do and more to explore. Unfortunately, they needed to work during the day. It was impossible for them to stay forever.

...

Inside Shelter 404.

Looking at the players lying down in the nurturing cabins, Chu Guang wondered if he should also try to recruit some idlers who didn’t have to work during the day, or players in other time zones. Otherwise, there would only be one person left in the huge outpost, which was not good for security.

"I think I’ll sleep in the shelter today."

Unless it was necessary, he really didn't want to go back to his crap lodgings on Baker Street. While Chu Guang was thinking about what to do, Little Seven came up to him.

"Master."

"What…"

"The physical examination reports of the clones have been updated. Would you like to see them?"

Chu Guang hesitated. "… Physical examination report?"

"Mhm! Every time a player logs out normally, the nurturing cabin will scan the clones, record their bodily function, extract a certain number of embryonic stem cells for backup, and record the progress of the genetic sequence development…"

"Wait, what is a genetic sequence?" Chu Guang felt that he had missed something when he heard such unfamiliar concepts.

Faced with the question, Little Seven answered, "Did you not notice that the clones used by each player were synthesized from different DNA? The genetic sequence is the type of DNA…"

Chu Guang immediately followed up with another question, "So what is the development progress?"

"Each genetic sequence is carefully designed, but unfortunately we have not fully grasped the mystery of life. Not every trait has been fully expressed. It's like how the children of athletes are more likely to become athletes, but they are not born as athletes. The so-called development progress refers to the degree of dominant expression of special segments in the genetic sequence, which is usually expressed by a percentage. For example, if the development progress reaches 100%, the performance of the living body will be infinitely closer to the limit of the designed gene, reaching its most perfect state. However, it’s almost impossible.”

"At present, the development progress of the four genetic sequences we have activated is between 0 and 1%. According to our research, as long as we continuously stimulate their survival instincts and get them to exercise, we can increase this value."

If the genetic sequence was understood as a character class, the development progress was probably similar to their level. Genetic sequences focused on strength enhancement were like the barbarian class. They were inherently stronger and tended to work on their strength attributes.

It was like the body Old White possessed. The other players were quite ordinary, but he had a lot of body hair and a muscular build.

Goodness.

These clones… Oh, no, players… could level up. There was even such an amazing talent setting! It was so important, but he just learned about it.

Staring at Little Seven who was nonchalantly explaining the matter, Chu Guang couldn't help but snort, "Why didn’t you tell me such an important setting earlier?"

In a sad voice, Little Seven grumbled, "Didn't you tell me not to speak suddenly? I was going to tell you this back then…"

Chu Guang sighed to himself

This damn robot… It definitely did this on purpose!
