Did you finish reading Overgeared? Do you miss the weird logic of a video game world? And a Mr. Main Character who starts off kinda meh but slowly becomes the top player? Perhaps some weird math that you’re not sure checks out? Oh oh, and how about poorly or not at all explained game mechanics?
Well, this is not Satisfy, but it is MID. No really.
And “MID Overgeared” is just about what I’d say to describe this novel. Is it fair to compare this novel to Overgeared? Not at all. It’s childish and unprofessional, which is why I’m going to do it.
Sure, it is still early as there are just the original 20 starting chapters up for reading. In this short amount of chapters, this novel very much did the Overgeared dance.
Pull out your bingo cards for a fun way to check things off:
1) character starts off as a nobody. Check
2) special event happens, now they can be someone. Check
3) items acquired with inconsistency? Check; does he have to literally pick up items or do they teleport into his inventory when a monster dies?
4) literally listing out every armor piece and it’s stats. Check, the armor had zero effects, which I found funny
5) character IRL is kind of a loser. Check; he isn’t poor but he dropped out of school to game, sleep and nothing else.
6) time dilation effect in game? Check. 3-to-1 and it makes no sense sometimes… already
7) character’s newly found special strength let’s him solo content that high rankers would never be able to? Check
8) video game AI is incredibly unrealistically good? Check
9) in-game gods? Check
10) NPCs act like humans? Check
11) Free Space: this list is annoying? Check; just leave a dislike and skip out on the mean comment. Thanks
12) in a fight, A and B are the same -> A didn’t work but somehow B works? Check; specifically with casting time
13) in-game gold to IRL money conversion? Check
14) somewhat stable family life despite the circumstances? Check
15) skeletons portraying emotions? Check; down to the clackity clacking
16) titles having major impact on gameplay, especially compared to any IRL video games? Check
17) unexplained resource system? Check; is “holy power” his mana bar or something? What is the regen rate on it?
18) spell casting with no proper rules? Check; you can cast while lying down on the floor, in the fetal position, apparently
19) Mr. Main Character likes NPCs more than average? Check
6 more for a proper bingo board but you get the point. I can continue the list, mind. I just don’t wanna touch on spoilers exactly. Nothing so far is direct spoilers - also it is a tedious list. Like say: 20) game is played by entering a pod of sorts, with a headset? Check.
See? I can continue, but that’s enough.
One thing I wanna take a moment to point out is how chill Mr. Main Character is. At one point, his entire reaction to something was “Cool.” I thought it was brilliant.
tl;dr: Overgeared but MID. Figuratively and Literally. It’s still engaging and fun to read. I do recommend it; I’m not trying to be mean, I’m trying to be funny… I’m not very funny though which balances out with this novel. Ayyyy
