Note that I haven't read until the end and I refuse to, because I want to only keep the best out of this novel.
The concept of the novel is amazing and it inspired a lot of other novels out there. The protagonist is "Interesting" in his own way I guess. The problem is that there are no clear rules leading to inconsistency in the plot. Chinese Nationalism and stereotypes are a large repulsion force for many, at least for me it was.
I enjoy a little bullshido(bullshit bushido) here and there, but when the whole story is based on the protagonist being the chosen one, it simply becomes boring, because surprise, even if you kill the protagonist they will immediately come back to life, not very surprising. Oh his friends died, well here's a plot device to bring them back to life, killing all and any sentiment the reader might have felt over a loss.
The main problem of this novel however is a lack of creativity, it could become a huge success and something great, even a game series or something, but instead the author decided to add nationalistic anthems and plot armor to all his "Chinese" participants.
Let me ask you a question, if I went and told you that the boring ass protagonist you read about in the first few chapters is supposed to be potentially the strongest in terror infinity, even you would call it bullshit, you yourself would be able to think hundreds of methods to kill him. I'm sure many of you could think of a better plot for the story to go on, instead of how the author decided to handle this. Even if you wouldn't be able to write it in words.
There is a problem with this novel and you can't hide from this, even if you disregard nationalism, disregard the plot armor, the problem still remains, because you will simply be unable to Identify yourself with the protagonist. Why? because he makes no sense, he has no clear goal, I can't even tell why he would want to take his dead girlfriend's clone back to the world the living, why? To begin with even the smartest man in the series sounds like an idiot to me, I don't understand what was the point in what he did in most of the novel, all I understood about him was that he could do machines, all his other bright findings were mostly conclusions he came upon without any valid reason to think about them and being anti-social doesn't make you retarded.
The limits break bullshit becomes a concept early one, but only gets worse as the series progresses. The real problem however is that they are given so much potential for growth, advancement and could potentially even exploit the system, because of stupid rules and what they do? Nothing, even discovering a new item is suddenly a huge matter for some reason.
