I read a few bad comments so i was hesitant about reading this novel ; but as i found the synopsis interesting, i started it. And i'm glad i did.
While i found the beginning bland and savorless, it gets more and more interesting as the story advances.
The 10-year agreement of no cultivation which seemed nonsensical at the beginning turns out to be an important aspect of the main character psychological maturation. Because, while he claimed that it was to give a head-start to the other geniuses of the world, it becomes apparent as the story unfolds that it was in fact out of lazyness. The protagonist was satisfied with living a life of idleness and pleasures as a treasured young master of a powerful sect. And he would have probably continued if it wasn't for the circumstances leaving him with no other choice than to become powerful. He eventually comes to regret wasting so much time, but instead of giving up, it only fuels his motivation.
I really enjoy following his progression as a person and as a cultivator. Though some of his decisions remain a bit foolish at times. The title of overlord doesn't really suit his personality ; moreover he's simply useless when it comes to strategy and has basically no leading skills in my opinion.
As for the so called "plot armor", it is indeed very present ; but no more than in the other novels of Wuxiaworld.
All in all, a very enjoyable story.
Update : as of now at 700+ chapters, despite the annoying filler chapters, the story is more and more to my liking, especially the mc's cultivation path which is very ambitious.
And i would like to share some of his thoughts when asked why he spends so much time reading :
Xiang Shaoyun hesitated slightly before saying, "Every single book that has been preserved over the generations has its own worth. That is why there is a saying that in a book, there is a house of gold; in a book, there is a shade of jade. We are martial cultivators, and cultivating the body should naturally be our focus. But I also believe that cultivating the mind is essential as well. That is the worth of the so-called useless books. Everyone should cultivate the mind. Only with a strong body and mind will one be able to handle and face different situations appropriately. One's frame of mind will also expand, allowing one to reach greater heights in life and face all tribulations with a smile on one's face."
Honestly, i find the growth of this character very relatable and worthy of admiration.
