Chapter 27 - Version Update

Lu Ran felt like he was talking to a wall. In actuality, he did want to learn a secondary profession. In Limitless City, the three most popular civilian professions were nutritionist, alchemist, and blacksmith.

If a familiar wanted to level up, in addition to combat and regular training, it largely depended on eating. Progress was seventy percent dependent on diet and thirty percent on training. Selecting the right ingredients and maintaining a balanced diet could significantly accelerate the familiar's leveling process. As for how to balance a diet, that was what nutritionists studied.

Alchemists, like nutritionists, were invaluable allies to combat beastmasters. In Limitless City, familiars as well as beastmasters that could heal were very rare. If beastmasters and familiars were seriously injured or poisoned in a secret realm, they relied on the medicines and antidotes crafted by alchemists to save their lives.

Generally speaking, before beastmasters challenged a secret realm, they would stock up a lot of medicine in their storage in case of an emergency. Of course, the healing effects of these medicines were not as effective as healing skills.

Finally, there were the blacksmiths who were more suited to serving beastmasters rather than familiars. After all, there were not many familiars that needed equipment or tools, while beastmasters themselves were relatively weak, so it was necessary to be fully armed.

These three major professions were the most popular secondary professions in Limitless City. As for the other civilian professions, they were relatively niche. Honestly, Lu Ran really wanted to learn all three since they all seemed useful.

However, it appeared that it wasn’t easy to find a systematic way to learn them, so he was forced to wait for the establishment of the beastmaster university. When the time came, he could choose not to apply for the combat department and instead major in some secondary professions.

After buying the two swords, Lu Ran bid farewell to Master Lin. With the swords in hand, Lu Ran could return to sword training with Captain Doofus.

I hope that training with Advanced weapons will be far more efficient than using normal wooden and iron swords!

"Let's go, Captain Doofus."

This time, Lu Ran didn’t store Captain Doofus away and let it walk with him side by side down the street.

"Woof."

"I didn't forget. We’re going to buy food for you right now," Lu Ran said as he shrugged.

It was difficult to customize a unique nutritious diet for Captain Doofus on the spot.

First, he had to prepare some food for Captain Doofus according to the generic recipes for Wind familiars recommended in the Basic Beast Taming Manual.

The pig trotters, canned food, chicken, and beef at home weren’t bad, but they were definitely not suitable for the transcended Captain Doofus now. If he wanted it to level up quickly, he had to use ingredients from secret realms just like other beastmasters would.

Some secret realms would drop extraordinary poultry and beast meat which were more nutritious than normal meat. Additionally, fruits, vegetables, and spices from secret realms were also more enriching than their normal counterparts.

"Woof, woof."

As Lu Ran walked, he lowered his head and thought about how many days' worth of food he should buy for Captain Doofus.

I guess I should check the price of the food first, huh?

Originally, he thought 10,000 crystal coins was a lot, but now, he realized that it wouldn’t last. How could those newcomers who didn't score an S survive?

"Woof, woof."

"Huh, what?"

While Lu Ran was thinking, Captain Doofus kept interrupting him, letting him know that an acquaintance was ahead.

Acquaintance? Who could it be?

The streets of Limitless City were lined with towering trees of unknown species, their dark green leaves swaying in the wind.

Lu Ran looked up and saw a young man and a wild boar running side by side on the street, seemingly to exercise.

"Huff, huff..."

The two seemed to have been running for a while. Lu Ran watched the pair approach him and recalled that this was the pig farmer who tested his attributes yesterday.

It turned out to be him. Captain Doofus has a good memory.

"It's you!!!"

At the same time, Pig Farmer also saw Lu Ran across the street, so he stopped with his familiar. Unexpectedly, he saw Lu Ran again just a day later. Although the two tested their attributes in the same place, and the starting point was not far away, it was still quite a distance away from the residential area.

"I remember you were called… Pedestrian A," Pig Farmer said in surprise.

"Yeah. Are you... exercising?" Lu Ran asked.

"Yes, just a simple physical exercise. It costs money to train in secret realms. Currently, these basic outdoor exercises are enough." Pig Farmer replied.

Hearing this, Lu Ran silently coughed. Compared to the other party's frugality, he seemed to be a little too wasteful.

"Snort, snort."

His familiar, on the other hand, seemed very dissatisfied with its beastmaster's frugal behavior, likely because its rations had been reduced.

"Hey, can I add you as a friend?" Pig Farmer asked as he suddenly thought of something, his eyes lighting up.

"We can clear secret realms together in the future."

Pig Farmer remembered that Gifted Writer Hua said that Lu Ran's initial score shouldn’t be low and that he had great potential, just like himself. He was still new to the place, and it was always good to have another friend.

"Sure… but I may not challenge a secret realm for a while."

Lu Ran didn’t reject his friend request.

When the two exchanged ID numbers, Lu Ran asked, "Have you followed Sister Hua and joined the Alliance?"

Pig Farmer shook his head. "No, I just contacted Sister Hua in real life to register my identity and chose to join a guild instead."

"Guild?" Lu Ran was quite surprised.

Pig Farmer scratched his head awkwardly and smiled.

"I urgently need a large sum of money, and the guild gives a higher salary."

"What salary?" Lu Ran was curious.

"As long as you become a formal member, you will immediately get a two million Yuan signing bonus."

"That much!?"

Lu Ran was surprised.

Two million just for joining the guild... To be honest, it was enough to tempt most people.

But thinking back, the Medicine Pavilion seemed to have said that it would provide housing to formal members. They were all spending a lot of money on recruitment.

"There are conditions and assessments, so I am only a probationary member right now. If I fail the assessment in a month, I can't become a formal member," Pig Farmer explained.

"I heard it's very difficult. This guild is a top guild in Limitless City #3 and only accepts elites. My C score is nothing. Sister Hua also knows my situation and suggested that I try this guild first. If I can't pass, then I could always consider joining the Alliance."

"Good luck," Lu Ran cheered.

Pig Farmer should be from the countryside, just like Lu Ran's grandparents. His grandfather made a living by hunting, so he knew that compared with the city, most of those areas were still very poor. It was normal to seek a large sum of money to improve one’s living standard.

For this pig farmer, Limitless City might be his only chance to change his life and move up the social ladder.

"Are you going this way to the Beastmaster Square?" Pig Farmer asked.

"Yes, I'm going over to buy some food for my dog," Lu Ran said as he looked at Captain Doofus, who was showing the wild boar its fighting spirit.

"Snort."

The wild boar looked at Captain Doofus with disdain.

Captain Doofus: (?_?)

"Hahaha, what a coincidence. I was also going to buy some food. Why don't we go together?" Pig Farmer invited.

However, before Lu Ran could reply, they were both caught off guard as they looked up at the sky.

No, the entire Limitless City #3, or rather, every beastmaster in every Limitless City around the world, was shocked.

The familiar notification sound rang in their ears again without any warning.

[Detected. The number of beastmasters who have passed the beginner trial has reached 100,000.]

[Now updating the facilities of Limitless City.]

[New Limitless City structure: Heavenly Familiar Ranking.]

[The Heavenly Familiar Ranking is located in the center of the Beastmaster Square in each Limitless City. It is divided into four rankings: the Transcendent Species Ranking, the Champion Species Ranking, the King Species Ranking, and the Overlord Species Ranking. Each ranking has 10 spots.]

[The rankings are updated once a month. When the rankings are confirmed, the beastmasters on the rankings will receive a large number of crystal coins and other rewards depending on their rank.]

[Ranking conditions: Each ranking is specific to a particular species of familiar and comes with certain requirements for eligibility. A familiar's species' potential is evaluated comprehensively, considering combat performance in secret realms and arena battles. Please actively challenge secret realms and compete with other beastmasters.]

[The next update will be when the number of beastmasters reaches 1 million. ]

The voice came and went quickly. When it completely disappeared, the silent Limitless City burst into commotion. Veterans and newbies alike were attracted to the updated content.

In the Beastmaster Square of each Limitless City, nearby beastmasters could suddenly see a huge four-sided stone tablet appear with a blinding light. On the gray stone tablet, black and gold letters shone brightly.

Transcendent Ranking: No. 1, Temporarily Unavailable. No. 2, Temporarily Unavailable. No. 3...

Champion Ranking:...

King...

A ranking appeared on each side of the stone tablet, but the slots remained blank.

Beastmasters cried out one after another in surprise.

"Damn, there are already 100,000 beast masters around the world? What happened in the past two days?"

"My god, the cheapskate Limitless City is finally willing to cough up some crystal coins for rewards! This darned place finally has facilities for distributing benefits."

"Heavenly Familiar Rankings? There are only 10 spots, and I am destined to never take one."

"No more talk. Let's challenge a secret realm right now. While no one is on the list, maybe I can be ranked for a few minutes and take a screenshot to brag about it for the rest of my life."

On the forest path, still some distance from the Beastmaster Square, the two new beastmasters had particularly blank expressions.

"Crystal coins..."

Pig Farmer kept mumbling as his expression fluctuated. He was initially eager but then shook his head as if doubting his strength.

On the other hand, Lu Ran, next to him, was a little sluggish.

"It's over… It's over… Damn it!"

New facilities can pop up?

This update caught him by surprise. He felt that he had been completely backstabbed by Limitless City. Once he made it onto the ranking, how could he keep a low profile? It would be fine if he didn’t make it onto the list, but if he did, wouldn't it be equivalent to announcing to the whole server that Captain Lu and Captain Doofus were OP?

Next to him, Captain Doofus nodded thoughtfully, revealing a wise and sharp look.

Pig Farmer and the boar looked at them.

•_•?

How come the mental state of this pair was even more exaggerated than theirs?
